Michigan State University provides several ways to help students pay for their education. Need-based aid is provided to students based on level of need once the FAFSA form is filled out. Need-based comes in the form of grants, scholarships, and federal work-study awards and opportunities. Loans are also available. No additional financial aid forms are necessary besides the FAFSA to be considered for need-based aid. It is encouraged that students apply early as aid is provided on a first come, first served basis.
The Spartan Advantage Program (SPAD) is a need-based initiative that helps Michigan resident, dependent students that demonstrate the most need based upon income. It is awarded to help with costs such as tuition, fees, room, board, and books. Admitted students will be considered automatically with the submission of their FAFSA. If admitted to the SPAD program, students will need to fill out and sign the SPAD Agreement form. The Michigan Competitive Scholarship is based on need and merit and students will be considered on those two factors along with a qualifying ACT test score and additional eligibility requirements. Additional scholarships are provided to students with special considerations including international student scholarships, out-of-state scholarships, Michigan resident scholarships, criteria-specific scholarships, and transfer student scholarships. Students can also search for outside scholarships. Resources are available for the diverse needs of veteran students. Aid is available for students who choose to studying abroad or may need summer aid.
Grants are another form of help for students. Some Michigan State University grants available to students include the Michigan Child Care Grant which helps students who have children enrolled in certain licensed daycare centers, the TEACH Grant, the Pennsylvania Spartan and Ohio Spartan Grants, and the Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver which pays for the resident tuition for eligible students who are members of an eligible tribe and certified one-quarter Indian blood quantum.
Student employment opportunities can be found through the Career Services Website. Handshake, a website to help find job opportunities and career development is available to access through the Career Services Website. Students wishing to work as resident assistants receive free room and board as part of their employment package. Resident assistants help mentor, provide leadership, and assist in student engagement on campus and in student residences.
