Howard University provides its incoming students with a variety of need-based aid programs to help students and their families pay for their education. The Student Financial Services provides assistance to students and is there to answer any questions. In order to be considered for all potential need and merit-based financial aid, students must fill out a FAFSA. Students receiving aid packages can expect to see a variety of aid types including federal and parent and student loans, federal work study opportunities, merit and need-based scholarships, and Howard University institutional and federal grants, including the TEACH grant. HU provides some students with the opportunity to use the Book Voucher Program which provides money toward books and supplies that comes from a student's excess financial aid package. Students are sometimes able to use this when funds are not available in time to pay for these materials.
Students can also supplement their education with job or internships opportunities through Handshake. Students can check with their specific colleges to see about additional internship opportunities. Additional funding may be available for members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. through its Delta Founders & Past National Presidents Endowed Scholarship.
HU Student Financial Services page helps students organize themselves and navigate the financial aid process. Students can access the library of Frequently Asked Financial Aid Questions, financial aid basics page, the cost of attendance page, an area with helpful
financial aid policies, a financial aid glossary, and student consumer information. HU also holds
occasional financial literacy events to help teach its students about financial literacy and wellness.

Howard University provides incoming freshmen opportunities to compete for merit scholarships including the HU Presidential Scholarship, the HU Founders Scholarship, the HU Capstone Scholarship, the HU Leadership Scholarship, and the HU Opportunity Grant. These are all merit- based scholarships with an emphasis on test scores and an aspect relating to financial need. In order to qualify for these merit scholarships, students must submit the FAFSA form and a full application for admissions packet. No additional scholarship application is needed. Some of the HU need-based scholarships are also based on SAT/ACT scores so submitting a FAFSA even if you think you will not receive any need-based aid will also qualify students for opportunities such as these.
The Bison STEM Scholars Program is a merit-based scholars program designed to challenge high-achieving high school students and prepare them for STEM-related education and coursework at HU; interested students must apply for admission as well as for this particular program separately through its own application. Several rigorous requirements are necessary in order to be considered for this program.
