Brigham Young University students of all types can apply for financial, need-based aid by first filling out a FAFSA. Students must also fill out a scholarship application through the online portal in order to be considered for both need and merit-based aid. Several types of need-based aid are available to BYU students including federal Pell Grants, federal student loans, federal parent loans, and large variety of scholarships. Students can also research private loans to subsidize their educational expenses. Veteran and military benefit and financial assistance is available as well.
Several types of scholarships are available with various scholarship eligibility requirements. In addition to need and merit-based scholarships awarded to incoming freshman, there are also specialty scholarships that include spring and summer scholarships, former or continuing student scholarships, transfer student scholarships, international student scholarships, BYU college and department scholarships, and outside scholarship opportunities. Some students may also be eligible for short-term loans to help them pay their bills by the deadline, if their financial aid is not available in time.
BYU provides students with a variety of helpful tools, calculators, and checklists to help plan educational expenses. These include a general Financial Aid Checklist for incoming freshman and then specialized checklists for other types of students including an International Student Financial Aid Checklist, a Transfer Student Checklist, and a Just Married Financial Aid Checklist. There are additional checklists available for students are in the categories of a Departing Missionary, a Returning Missionary, or if students happen to be a Parent of a Missionary.
Students can find student consumer information, information on the cost of attendance, and a helpful net price calculator, as well. Cougar Cash is an on-campus debit card program to help students manage their money and on-campus spending.
The BYU Marriott School of Business Personal Finance Page is a resource for students looking to increase their knowledge around personal finances. In addition to its outside resource page with related links, students can choose lessons on this page by selecting if they are a beginning learner, intermediate learner, or an advanced learner.
Brigham Young University's Financial Fitness Center's mission is to provide resources to help each student "assume financial responsibility." Students can make an appointment at this center or browse its comprehensive website and learn things like Financial Planning in 6 Easy Steps, Creating a Spending Plan, Goal-Setting Fundamentals, and Managing Student Loans. There is a Smart Spending section with tips on everything from moving expenses, buying clothing, dressing for success, shopping for groceries, dating on a budget, and much more!
Additional topics include establishing, borrowing and managing credit, more specific financial planning tools, "cool apps" , financial calculators, a handy scholarship resource page, and additional, helpful financial-related links. Students can also see where they stack up by taking a quick financial fitness quiz.
There is also a unique area on this page titled "If You Are..." which provides more personalized information, articles, tools, and resources for students in special situations. Examples of these include if you are a new parent, considering a job offer, getting married, about to graduate, or are living without a budget.

Brigham Young University provides the opportunity for incoming students to compete for merit scholarships. In order to be considered, students must fill out a scholarship application through the online portal. On the application, students can select which scholarships they would like to compete for; essays may be required for some. Students must submit the scholarship application whether or not they have received an acceptance letter. Consideration will continue once students have been accepted and as long as scholarship applications are submitted by the appropriate deadlines. Students are ranked by their unweighted high school GPA along with their tests scores. Approximately ¼ of incoming freshman will receive a merit-based scholarship. In addition to the Russell M. Nelson Academic Scholarship and the Utah Competitive Sterling Scholarship, students can also be considered for the National Merit Scholarship.
Incoming transfer students are eligible for scholarships once they have completed 12 credit hours at BYU and as long as they meet the application deadline.
