Students wishing to receive need-based aid to help pay for their BGSU education must first complete their FAFSA form. This will determine eligibility for need-based scholarships, grants, federal loans and work-study opportunities. BGSU offers a large number of need-based scholarships. Some scholarships may be considered partially need-based, but also consider merit. Additional BGSU scholarships may be found using this scholarship search.Students can also access the scholarship calculator to estimate potential scholarship opportunities. Grants include federal grants like the Federal Pell, SEOG, the TEACH grant and the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant. There’s also a state grant called the Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG). Federal loans are available for students and parents along with special loans for nursing students pursuing specific nursing careers. Students wishing to subsidize further may consider private loans options. Federal Work Study (FWS) is another potential opportunity to help students reduce their out-of-pocket college expenses.

Bowling Green State University offers merit scholarships to its incoming freshman. There are several merit-based scholarships that may be awarded to you. Prospective freshman can estimate their potential merit scholarship by using this scholarship calculator. All students will be automatically considered if you apply by the January 15th deadline, most are renewable and range in award from $1,000 to $8,000 depending upon the scholarship type. Two specifically for freshman include the University Freshman Academic Scholarship and the BG Success Scholarship for out-of-state students. There is another freshman scholarship that is based on merit, but also has a financial component to it; this is called the Falcon Achievement Award. This particular scholarship requires a separate application to be considered.
The Presidential Scholars Awards are full in-state tuition scholarships available for up to 30 incoming students based on a variety of academic and personal achievement. This is a renewable scholarship and an additional select 5 students (of the 30) will be selected for the Forsyth Scholarship. This is awarded to students pursuing a science-related program. The Alumni Laureate Scholarship is another merit-based scholarship that students can compete for. Financial consideration may be made, but having financial need is not required to apply. The Sidney A. Ribeau President's Leadership Academy (PLA) is another merit-based scholarship based on community service and leadership. The PLA scholarship is also one that considers financial need. The Academic Investment in Math and Science (AIMS) Scholarship is underrepresented students pursuing lifelong careers in STEM areas. There are some additional program requirements to be considered for the AIMS scholarship, including a separate application.
Students can maximize merit-scholarship potential opportunities by applying to the Honors College during the admissions application process. There is also an Honors College Application that will need to be filled out along with the regular admissions application to be considered for most of the scholarships mentioned above.
